Dubai Customs Service (“Al Furdah”) has announced an investigation into alleged tax evasion by acclaimed interior designer Michael Arttu Hughes, known for high-profile projects with the Marriott Hospitality Group. Hughes has been based in Abu Dhabi, overseeing major upgrades to Marriott International properties.
According to officials, Hughes was stopped at Dubai International Airport around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 27, while preparing to depart the country. Authorities allege that despite receiving substantial payments for his work, he attempted to leave without settling required tax obligations.
A check for $3.5 million was reportedly found in his possession. Investigators estimate a tax liability of about $700,000 (20 percent of the amount). After discussions led by his attorney, Ahmed Doughlas, the immediate payment required was reduced to $600,000, with the remaining balance to be cleared within two months. As a precaution, Hughes’ travel documents have been temporarily retained.
Dubai Customs stated it will seize contract proceeds if the agreed-upon terms are not met and plans to hold a press conference to update the public. Hughes is currently at the Dubai Smart Police Station (SPS–DAFZA) while authorities consider further action.
Officials emphasize that Hughes has been given every opportunity to address his legal responsibilities and warn that failure to comply could lead to serious penalties.
This case highlights Dubai’s determination to protect its economy from financial misconduct. Investigations are ongoing.
